Matsyalaya Vardhanam

Draupadi was choosing a husband. Whoever could hit the target and carry the mighty bow would win her hand. The target was a fish fixed to the ceiling, spinning. The task was to put the arrow through the eye of the fish and down the target. Kings from all over assembled in the great city.

The kings went near the bow one by one. The bow was very heavy and divine. King after king tried and failed as the bow was too heavy. Duryodhana rose up from his seat. He missed the target by a width of his little finger. Radheya now walked toward the stage. He looked wonderful as he walked like a panther across the hall towards the stage. Krishna was looking on with grave concern. Radheya missed the mark by just the breath of a hair. No one dared to try after Radheya had failed.

Like a sudden flame leaping from a heap of ashesArjuna stood up. It was a sight. Krishna was waiting for this. Someone shouted, “Is a Brahmin allowed to try and fell the target?” Her brother yelled “Why certainly!” Arjuna approached the great bow, gazed at the reflecting pool instead of the target and sent arrow after arrow in quick succession. The target that had baffled all of them so long, fell on the ground. There was a terrific uproar. Flowers rained on Arjuna from the sky. With the gait of a swan, Draupadi walled up to Arjuna and placed the garland around his neck. The hall was resounding with the blare of conches and trumpets and all the musical instruments could be heard playing. Arjuna then took Draupadi by the hand and descended the stage.
